Salmon Fishing Baits

Common Brands of Lures I use:
NK
Lyman
RAC spoons
Williams Wobbler
Nasty Boy
Whitefish Spoon

Northern King Salmon Lures, commonly known as NK.  Here are just a few of the colours that these reliable salmon fishing lures are available in.

My Favorite Colours (NK- or Northern King)

Why NK's?

I like NK's because they are strong, reliable, come in a wide variety of colours and of course they lure-in heavy Great Lakes Salmon. Although I also like RAC Spoons which are very similar in design, but are a little wider and thinner gauge.

RAC Spoons also come in a wide variety of colours; I have found in the past when you catch large sized Chinook Salmon on a RAC, you can bet your money that you will be taking a set of pliers to the mutilated lure. I might say to you, hey! Straighten this out!. I have thrown away several RAC Spoons because the were literally destroyed.

But don't get me wrong, I have also caught some of my largest fish on a RAC, peticularly the black & purple colour, trolled deep. That is why I will continue to buy them. You see once you catch a few of these Chinook Salmon leviathons from the deep on a specific brand of lure and successfully land them, thin metal or not, if it brings in, I'm stuffing my box with them!...I said pardon?.

Trolling

Generally speaking, I usually troll approx 3.5 miles / hour and depending what time of the year it is I set the downriggers between depths of 30' to 110' deep.

I use  fish finding sonar to locate the salmon and bait fish. The bait fish shows up on the fish finder looking like a large black cloud, and a lot of times you will notice salmon right behind them.

It's a good idea to pay close attention when this happens, as the Sal-almightly is likely to strike. I have seen all hell break loose when this happens, so it's a good idea to keep the paths to the rods clear. Anything in the way can get walked on or crushed and believe me if it's a $1500.00 camera, you will be wishing you were on the chum line.

It is also a very good idea to hit the up buttons on the Cannon Electric Downriggers onboard to get the balls & cable out of the water, especially when you know you have a Lunker Salmon on the end of your fishing line.

They like to run fast and if they get around the cable, it's bye bye!. You may have a strong stomach for the high seas, but you lose a Salmon Derby winner, because of a stupid mistake like this, you WILL be hanging over the side.
